Overview

For Kaiser Elementary, improving family engagement mattered as much as improving student reading habits. The school wanted to build a more collaborative culture among school leaders, teachers, and families, and needed a partner that could deliver summer programming materials in both English and Spanish for its Spanish-speaking families. These needs led Kaiser to partner with Springboard’s Summer Literacy program.

The program paired direct classroom instruction with team-building huddles and weekly family workshops, where families learned to support reading at home alongside their children. Sessions ran four days a week from 8:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with Spanish-speaking families receiving translation support at each workshop.

A Weak Family-School Connection

Kaiser wanted to build a stronger sense of community between school leaders, teachers, and families, grounded in trust, communication, and participation, rather than the more limited connection that existed before the partnership.

Language Access for Spanish-Speaking Families

With a large Spanish-speaking population, Kaiser needed a partner that could provide summer programming materials in both English and Spanish.

Solution

A FELA-Based Summer Literacy Program

Kaiser selected Springboard's Summer Literacy offering. Students received alternating lesson blocks of Reading Readiness and phonics, writing, small-group instruction, read-alouds, and shared reading, and teachers were coached in using DIBELS to measure student growth.

Team-Building Huddles and Family Workshops

The program opened with a team-building huddle between each teacher and family, followed by weekly family workshops where students and families practiced reading strategies together. Spanish-speaking families received translation support at each workshop.

Planning Grounded in Shared Goals

Planning began with mutual goals, including 80% student instruction attendance. Springboard's program leader coached Kaiser's existing Parent Liaison on program logistics, while teacher recruitment and student enrollment campaigns got underway.
